Wellness Tips

Arthritis can damage your joints, organs, and skin. There are things you can do to keep the damage from getting worse. They might also make you feel better.

  • Try to keep your weight down. The more you weigh, the more strain is put on sore joints in your body. So, don't be surprised if your doctor puts you on a weight loss plan.
  • Exercise. Moving all of your joints will help you. The doctor or nurse can show you how to move more easily. Going for a walk every day will help, too. Exercise can decrease your pain, increase flexibility, improve your heart and blood flow, and help you maintain your weight.
  • Taking medicines, including Acetaminophen (for example, Tylenol) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (for example, aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Aleve) relieve the symptoms of arthritis by blocking your pain. The medication that's right for you will depend upon the type of arthritis you have.
  • Exercises that pound joints, such as running, are off-limits, but gliding movements are fine. Water aerobics is great for people with arthritis, as well as exercise bikes and elliptical trainers.
  • The ancient martial art of Tai Chi not only improves strength, balance and flexibility in older people, but it also has positive effects on chronic health conditions like multiple sclerosis and joint problems.
  • Try taking a warm shower in the morning.
  • See your doctor regularly.
  • Seek information that can help you.
